In this article, authors sought to analyze the performance and economic outcomes of the ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) program in India. Authors conducted an economic analysis of ASHA-Soft, a program implemented in Jodhpur, Rajasthan that provides direct, online payments to ASHAs. In their analysis, researchers examined data from 2015 to 2020, and considered incentives for ASHAs, total beneficiaries, overall contribution to the health care system, and unit cost per health service. Overall, researchers concluded that the ASHA-Soft program incentivized ASHAs to provide more health services. Additionally, researchers found that the satisfaction and motivation levels of ASHAs had increased since the program’s implementation. This study suggests promise for the ASHA-Soft program model, which may be modified and implemented to incentivize the work of ASHAs in other settings.
