This study compared the performance of community health workers (CHWs) in Uganda’s Kyaka II refugee settlement when paid in cash versus digital payments. Results showed that CHWs performed better with cash payments, as digital payments were often delayed and inconsistent, leading to demotivation. Factors like secondary education and having a side job were linked to better performance with cash payments. Stakeholders preferred cash due to the issues with digital payments. The study suggests improving digital payment systems to boost CHW motivation and performance in remote areas.
