This study assessed the accuracy of using mobile phone photos taken by a community health worker (CHW) for detecting dental caries in children aged 6-12 in Iran. Results showed high accuracy of tele-dentistry, with over 80% sensitivity and 90% specificity. Inter-rater reliability between remote dentists and gold standard dental examination was substantial to almost perfect. Parents generally had positive views towards tele-dentistry. This suggests tele-dentistry could be a reliable and cost-effective alternative for caries detection, particularly in lower-middle-income countries (LMICs).
