In Togo, during the COVID-19 pandemic, two community-based approaches for directly observed treatment (DOT) for tuberculosis (TB) were evaluated: one led by community health workers (CHW-DOT) and the other by families (FB-DOT). Results showed that the CHW-DOT group had higher rates of sputum conversion and more favorable treatment outcomes compared to the FB-DOT group. Non-smokers had better treatment outcomes than smokers. The findings suggest that integrating smoking cessation support into CHW-DOT programs could enhance TB treatment effectiveness.
