Critical roles of community health workers in combating stunting in low and middle-income countries

by

Authors: Muhammad Alwi Eka Pranata

Stunting remains a major health problem in low- and middle-income countries, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, affecting millions of children under five. It leads to poor physical growth, learning difficulties, and reduced productivity later in life. Community Health Workers (CHWs) play a key role in fighting stunting by educating families, promoting good nutrition, and improving hygiene practices. Countries like Indonesia and Afghanistan rely heavily on CHWs to reach vulnerable communities. However, CHWs face many challenges, such as poor pay, limited training, lack of supplies, and cultural barriers. To improve their impact, CHWs need better support, including fair wages, stronger training, digital tools, and inclusion in national health systems. Working together across sectors like health, sanitation, and agriculture can also help reduce stunting. With the right investment and community involvement, CHWs can make a big difference in improving child health and development.
