COVID-19 Risk Assessment among Vulnerable Small Business Owners in El Paso County, Texas

by

Authors: Sadie H Conway, Denise Vasquez, Kristina D Mena, Louis D Brown, Soyoung Kwon, Janelle Rios

This study aimed to provide COVID-19 risk assessments and safety strategies for vulnerable workers in high-risk areas. Four bilingual community health workers (CHWs) visited small businesses, mainly Hispanic-owned, to conduct on-site surveys. Results showed that 96% of businesses were at high or very high risk for COVID-19 transmission. While all businesses took some steps to reduce risks, nearly half were missing key safety measures. The CHWs’ culturally sensitive outreach helped identify hazards and educate businesses, and this approach could be useful in other similar communities.
