In this article, authors examine how community health workers in Brazil were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Researchers utilized three data collection methods: online surveys disseminated through social media, an online Facebook discussion forum, and in-depth interviews with two CHW union representatives. After analysis, researchers found that CHWs faced increased challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, including inadequate training, improper or missing personal protective equipment, and increased exposure to disease. A lack of local and federal government leadership exacerbated these challenges. While Brazilian CHWs ultimately adapted to the circumstances, authors concluded that the COVID-19 pandemic negatively affected health promotion and levels of trust in health professionals, including CHWs, in Brazil. Overall, the results of this study highlight the significant challenges that can emerge when CHW program governance is undermined during public health emergencies.
