This review looked at studies on whether community health worker programs for long-term diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure are worth the cost in low- and middle-income countries. It combined evidence from multiple studies and found that these programs are usually good value for money, often saving costs or providing strong health benefits relative to what is spent. Both disease-specific programs and broader integrated programs showed similar long-term value, and some evidence suggested the greatest benefits go to poorer communities. Overall, the study concludes that using community health workers for chronic disease care is an affordable and effective approach, and it can help improve access to care where health staff are limited.
