Women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are at a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. This study tested the feasibility of a diabetes prevention program for South Asian women with GDM in Karachi. Using a randomized controlled trial, 180 women with GDM were divided into an intervention group, receiving home-based educational sessions and reinforcement via text messages and printed materials, and a control group receiving standard care. Screening, recruitment, and retention rates were assessed, along with participant feedback. The study found that home-based interventions, supported by text messages and printed materials, were feasible and well-received. CHWs play an integral role in supporting the healthcare system of Pakistan, specifically in improving maternal and child health. Increasing their capacity and capability would help strengthen healthcare delivery within communities and the primary prevention of T2DM. A larger trial is needed to evaluate the long-term effectiveness of this approach in preventing diabetes.
