This review provides a comparative overview of CHW program implementation, expansion and reconfiguration for program managers and decision makers. Out of the 38 countries reviewed, only two ensured higher education for CHWs. Most countries do not guarantee adequate training and the majority of CHW work is carried out by women on a on a voluntary basis
