Community Health Workers’ Roles and Challenges in Wisconsin: A Mixed-Methods Study

by

Authors: M. Muska Nataliansyah, Ronald Anguzu, Sandra C. Iregbu, Mukul Sharda, Tasmia Amjad, Pinky Jha, Harvey Padek, David Nelson, Staci Young & Sanjay Bhandari

This study explored the experiences of Community Health Workers (CHWs) in Wisconsin, USA, including their roles, how they work with healthcare systems, and the challenges they face. The 40 CHWs surveyed and interviewed provided health education, referrals, advocacy, and support to help people access health and social services. Although most felt their work had a strong impact on patients, many said they received little professional recognition. Lack of funding, limited resources, and weak integration into healthcare systems were major challenges. The study highlights the need for better recognition, stable funding, and clearer career opportunities to support the CHW workforce.
