Community Health Workers: Improving Home Visiting Engagement of High-Risk Birthing People in Segregated Neighborhoods

by

Authors: Xiao Yu 1, Cristian I Meghea, Jennifer E Raffo, Ran Meng, Peggy Vander Meulen, Celeste Sanchez Lloyd, Lee Anne Roman

This study evaluated the impact of community health workers (CHWs) on home visiting (HV) engagement for birthing individuals in segregated neighborhoods. The program, Strong Beginnings (SB), which included CHWs, showed higher engagement rates and more home visits compared to the Maternal Infant Health Program (MIHP) without CHW involvement. CHWs complemented the efforts of nurses and social workers, especially in more segregated areas, highlighting the importance of CHWs in reducing disparities in perinatal health.
