Community health workers at the dawn of a new era: 2. Planning, coordination, and partnerships.

by

Authors: Muhammad Mahmood Afzal, George W. Pariyo, Zohra S. Lassi & Henry B. Perry

Community health worker (CHW) programs are often hindered by weak health systems, poor planning, lack of coordination, and failed partnerships. Through key consultations with government leaders and other public health experts, and a non-comprehensive literature review, this paper determined that CHW interventions should be integrated into formal health systems and, with strong national commitment to planning, establish a national coordination mechanism to further strengthen CHW interventions
