Community health workers play a central role in tuberculosis care in communities by screening for symptoms, collecting samples, referring patients for diagnosis, and supporting treatment follow-up. However, their work is often limited by lack of proper pay, training, equipment, and system support, and many still serve as volunteers despite the risks and workload involved. Tuberculosis work can also be demanding and risky, which may lead health workers to focus on other tasks that are easier to manage. To improve tuberculosis care at the community level, health systems need to provide fair compensation, strong support, and better coordination, while also involving community health workers in designing and improving these programs.
