Community Health Workers and Family Caregivers: Opportunities to Enhance Connection with Community Resources for Aging Populations and Families

by

Authors: Megan D’Alessandro, Nia Denise Gooding, Sandra Wilkniss, Wendy Fox-Grage

The 2022 National Strategy to Support Family Caregivers emphasizes helping caregivers connect with health and community services. One way to do this is by involving Community Health Workers (CHWs), who are trusted members of the community and can guide caregivers through complex systems of care. States are partnering with CHWs to build their capacity and fund their services. Many local organizations, like Area Agencies on Aging, are hiring CHWs to support older adults and caregivers, with many more planning to add CHWs in the near future. This presents a great opportunity to expand CHW support for family caregivers.
