Community Health Workers: A Key Workforce to Promote Health Equity for Children in Immigrant Families

by

Authors: Marine-Ayan Ibrahim Aibo, Shreya Kangovi, K. Casey Lion, Aditi Vasan

In the U.S., children in immigrant families face challenges accessing health care and social services due to complex systems, xenophobia, and limited support. Community health workers (CHWs), who share similar backgrounds with these families, can help by providing culturally appropriate health education, navigation, and support. CHW programs have been shown to improve communication with medical teams, chronic disease management, and overall satisfaction with care, making them ideal for supporting immigrant families.
