This is the second (2005) edition of the Community Health Worker Training Manual of Afghanistan’s Ministry of Public Health. The training manual provides an overview of the roles and responsibilities of CHWs in meeting the health needs of the population, as well as key information and skills the CHWs require. Each chapter includes sections on: background, things to know, things to do and key points. Numerous health topics are addressed: personal and home hygiene, safe food and water, immunization, nutrition, preventing common infectious diseases, maternal, newborn and child health, family planning, nutrition, HIV/AIDS, TB, first aid and mental health. The training manual also addresses key skills for CHWs, such as basic assessment and diagnosis, referral, communication, community mapping, household surveys, and basic drug administration,. The topics are based on the Basic Package of Health Services, the Community Based Health Worker Policy and the National Health Policy of Afghanistan.
