Community Health Worker Sustainability: Funding, Payment, and Reimbursement Laws in the United States

by

Authors: Cason D. Schmit, David J. Washburn, Megan LaFleur, Denise Martinez, Emily Thompson, Timothy Callaghan

With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, CHW funding changed at the federal level; however, CHW remuneration varies from state to state.   At the state level, CHW programs receive funding from grants, reimbursement for services, non-profit support and other mechanisms. The diversity of funding sources contributes to variations in CHW service provision and challenges the sustainability of CHW programs. This paper aimed to identify funding mechanisms that would enable  CHW programs to sustain a robust workforce.
