Community Health Worker/ Promotores/Representative Training Program Best Practices

by

Authors: Lalitha Vaidyanathan

California has developed a new set of voluntary recommendations to improve the quality and accessibility of training for community health workers, promotores, and representatives. The framework was developed with input from CHWs and other stakeholders and covers 12 areas, including training content, teaching methods, instructor experience, accessibility, assessment, costs, and ongoing support. It recommends at least 80 hours of initial training, regular professional development, training led or supported by experienced CHWs, low or no training fees, and practical support such as childcare and transport where possible. Overall, the framework aims to create consistent, high-quality training while keeping programs accessible and grounded in community experience.
