In this study, the authors explored how participation in curriculum-development workshops for a digital advocacy course influenced the perceptions of community health workers (CHWs) regarding advocacy. Data from discussions and surveys over six months involving 25 CHWs revealed an initial perception of themselves as community advocates but not self-advocates. However, they increasingly recognized the importance of advocating for better working conditions and sought greater involvement in decision-making. CHWs positively reflected on their advisory role in shaping the course content for improved acceptability and validity. This highlights the need to address systemic barriers and internalized norms that may hinder CHWs from fully realizing their potential as advocates.
