This study examined how community health workers (CHWs) in India are paid, focusing on the impact of digital tools and challenges in receiving timely wages. Researchers analyzed payment processes for Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) in two states, conducting interviews and focus groups with CHWs, supervisors, and health officials. Findings revealed delays in payment due to complex administrative steps, even with digital tools in place. However, strong local leadership and efficient systems improved processing times. Fully digitized payment methods increased transparency and satisfaction, while opinions on digitizing service records were mixed. The study highlights ways to streamline payment systems for CHWs in low- and middle-income countries.
