The challenges faced by cancer patients, such as negative impacts on quality of life, uncoordinated healthcare interactions, and disparities among low-income, minority, and non-English speaking patients, highlight the need for interventions that break this cycle. The study by Patel et al. focuses on a community health worker (CHW) intervention for low-income, minority cancer patients, providing weekly telephonic support, advanced care planning education, symptom assessment, and screening for social needs. The intervention significantly improved health-related quality of life, reduced emergency department and hospital use, and lowered the total cost of care compared to usual care. This underscores the potential of community-based navigation interventions to enhance patient outcomes and reduce healthcare costs.
