Community Health Worker Motivation in the U.S.: A Descriptive Qualitative Research Study

by

Authors: Sheryl L. Chatfield, Dennis Kirimi

This study explored what motivates Community Health Workers (CHWs) in the U.S. and what affects their job satisfaction and career growth. CHWs said their personal experiences and desire to improve the health of their communities strongly motivated them to do the work. Although they faced challenges such as high community needs and limited resources, they often felt confident and independent in their roles. The study suggests that expanding training opportunities, especially in local communities, could help attract, retain, and support more CHWs.
