Community health worker models in South Africa: a qualitative study on policy implementation of the 2018/19 revised framework

March 18, 2021 By

Authors: Joshua P Murphy, Aneesa Moolla, Sharon Kgowedi, Constance Mongwenyana, Sithabile Mngadi, Nkosinathi Ngcobo, Jacqui Miot, Denise Evans, Sophie Pascoe

CHWs in South Africa have long  formed a bridge between communities and  health facilities as the cornerstone of South Africa’s ward-based primary healthcare outreach teams. This study documents CHW policy implementation and adoption across six provinces to identify potential barriers and facilitators to implementation and help guide and inform future planning. The authors conclude that, to further health promotion, CHWs must be given opportunities for permanent employment, uniforms and better pay.
