Community Health Worker-Led Intervention to Increase Hepatitis D Virus Screening among Immigrants in the Metropolitan-DC Area

by

Authors: Christine Lin, Angeline Nguyen, Chooson Byambaa, Jennifer Galdamez, Hai Chi Le, Sandra Ashford, Lydia Tang

Hepatitis delta virus (HDV) is a serious infection that affects people with hepatitis B (HBV), increasing their risk of liver cancer. However, HDV screening is not common, especially among immigrant communities in Metropolitan-DC, where HBV rates are high. The Health Betterment Initiative (HBI) trained community health workers (CHWs) to educate immigrants about HDV and encourage screening. This study compared HDV screening rates before and after the education program. Early results show that while most people diagnosed with HBV saw a doctor, few were tested for HDV or used the educational materials. More efforts are needed to make the intervention more effective for immigrant communities.
