Community Health Worker Intervention for Newborns Not Passing Initial Universal Hearing Screening

by

Authors: Stephen Leong, Kristy Medina, Patricia J Peretz, Maria I Olmeda-Jenkins, Melissa A Oliver, Megan Kuhlmey, Stacey A Bernstein, Fajah Ferrer, Luz Adriana Matiz, Anil K Lalwani

This study assessed the effectiveness of a community health worker (CHW) intervention in ensuring newborns receive outpatient rescreening after failing initial hearing tests. Compared to a group without the CHW intervention, a higher percentage of newborns completed their follow-up screening when CHWs provided education and outreach to caregivers. Integrating CHWs into nursery teams could enhance adherence to recommended hearing screenings for newborns.
