Community health worker insights on promoting research engagement with diverse populations

by

Authors: Cynthia M Killough, Annemarie Madaras, Christina Phillips, Jennifer Hettema, Venice Ceballos, Jesus E Fuentes, Heidi Rishel Brakey, Katherine Wagner, Kimberly Page

This qualitative study sought to understand the unique perspectives of frontline CHWs to identify actionable barriers and facilitators that may impact representation of diverse groups in health research. Focus groups were conducted with CHWs and revealed the following five main themes: barriers/risks to research participation, facilitation of research, CHW roles, recommendations, and transparency. Along with emphasizing the high reliance and trust many communities have in CHWs, the findings of this study, derived from a participatory methodology, can further inspire investigators to promote genuine and informed CHW participation at all stages of research.
