Community Health Worker Diabetes Prevention Awareness Training in an Immersive Virtual World Environment: Mixed Methods Pilot Study

by

Authors: Laurie Ruggiero, Lauretta Quinn, Amparo Castillo, Colleen Monahan, Leticia Boughton Price, Wandy Hernandez

This study tested a 3D virtual training program to help Black female community health workers learn how to raise awareness about diabetes prevention. The training ran for 10 weeks and included interactive lessons. Most participants were satisfied with the training, felt more knowledgeable and confident afterward, and reported better eating habits. The main challenge was learning how to use the virtual avatars. Overall, the program showed promise and could be a useful way to train health workers remotely.
