Community Health Transformation: Paths to a Comprehensive and Transformative Community-Based Health System to Enhance Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health Equity and Health System Resilience in Rural Ethiopia

by

Authors: Gebremeskel, Akalewold Tadesse

This study focuses on improving maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH) in Ethiopia, where high child and maternal mortality rates persist despite efforts over the past decades. Community health worker (CHW) programs have been a key strategy, but challenges remain in fully addressing health needs. The study highlights the need for a shift in the CHW program toward a more comprehensive, equitable, and resilient community health system. Key areas for improvement include better resource allocation, stronger multi-level engagement, improving CHW working conditions, and addressing gaps in health equity. The research emphasizes the importance of involving multiple stakeholders, using innovative approaches, and integrating gender considerations to transform Ethiopia’s health system and meet global health goals.
