Community Health Navigators for Cancer Screening Among Deaf, Deafblind, and Hard of Hearing Adults Who Use American Sign Language

by

Authors: E Bergeron, R Valdez, C J Moreland, R Wang, T Knight, P Kushalnagar

This study focused on barriers faced by Deaf, deafblind, and hard of hearing (DDBHH) individuals in accessing cancer screening, especially communication challenges with healthcare providers. It conducted a needs assessment through three focus groups involving cancer survivors, advocates/navigators, and clinicians from May to June 2022. Key findings highlighted the need for culturally and linguistically aligned community health navigators (CHNs) proficient in American Sign Language (ASL). Participants emphasized the importance of CHN training on systemic barriers, cultural considerations, and accessibility to ASL resources. Addressing these issues is crucial to improve cancer screening rates and healthcare access for DDBHH individuals.
