In this commentary, authors draw on their experience with the development, implementation, and evaluation of community health worker interventions at Sinai Urban Health Institute in Chicago, Illinois, United States. Authors argue that effective CHW integration is hindered by various barriers, including recruitment, training and support, supportive and knowledgeable supervision, and career progression and pathways. Lastly, authors provide potential solutions to these barriers which they argue can help organizations fully realize the benefits of CHWs.
