This study explored whether community health workers (CHWs) could reduce safety hazards in homes of low-income, rural Hispanic families along the Texas-Mexico border. CHWs visited 47 families with young children to check for hazards and distribute safety devices. After 30 days, the number of hazards in these homes decreased by 26.2%, and the risk of hazards dropped by 70%. The findings suggest that CHWs are effective in improving home safety for hard-to-reach communities, but more research is needed to further evaluate this approach.
