Community health workers (CHWs) are especially crucial in providing healthcare to rural and remote communities, but may face barriers associated with the sociocultural environment of their communities. Researchers conducted a study to further understand barriers that CHWs face in South Asia and found that elements such as religion, culture, gender, social status and generational position present barriers in some situations. Understanding this region’s unique social barriers may guide development of CHW programs to better support CHWs and enhance their positive impact.
