Can telemedicine address neurologic health disparities in rural Guatemala: a health promotor educational intervention study

by

Authors: Amelia Adcock, Jessica E Frey

This study sought to determine the prevalence of neurologic disorders in San Lucas Tolíman, Guatemala. Additionally, researchers aimed to increase interest and knowledge in neurologic conditions among local health promoters. Using the results of a neurologic needs assessment, authors designed virtual monthly neurology-based workshops for 29 health promoters. Health promoters self-reported their knowledge of neurologic topics before and after completing the workshop series. Following the workshops, health promoters’ knowledge of neurology increased. Additionally, health promoters felt more comfortable diagnosing neurologic conditions. Overall, participating health promoters reported the virtual workshops to be informative, convenient, and easy to see and hear. In the future, virtual workshops may be a feasible option for educating health promoters and CHWs on clinically relevant topics such as neurologic disease.
