Noting the irregularities surrounding health worker training and supervision methods across different states in India, the Earth Institute and Columbia Global Center partnered with the Sri Venkata Sai Medical College and the government of Mahbubnagar District in Andhra Pradesh to pilot a model for ‘on-site coaching’ as an alternative approach to supervision and training. Coaches, or mentors, observe the current performance of the facilities as well as the skill level of each health worker and they then institute training customized to the unique needs of each worker and facility. This initial pilot includes fifty health workers and focuses on improving the delivery of maternal and child healthcare.
