This study explored how seven pharmacies in California introduced Community Health Worker (CHW) services through pharmacy technicians. Interviews showed that pharmacy technicians could help patients connect with social services, quit smoking, and manage health conditions. Pharmacies found that this work fitted well with their existing services and helped them better support patients. However, difficulties with billing and receiving payment made it harder to sustain these services. The study concludes that community pharmacies can be useful places for delivering CHW services, but health plans need clearer payment processes and guidance to support their wider use.
