Assessing Community Health Workers’ Performance Motivation

by

Authors: Kirimi, Dennis M.

Community Health Workers (CHWs) bridge gaps between the health system and at-risk populations, addressing social determinants of health. However, they face challenges like lack of integration into primary care, high caseloads, low wages, inadequate workspaces, and increased skill demands, leading to poor performance and high turnover. This study explored the factors affecting CHW turnover, challenges, and motivators in the U.S. through a scoping review, qualitative focus groups, and a mixed-methods analysis. Key findings highlighted that professional support and training are crucial motivators, while financial incentives had mixed results. Intrinsic motivators like personal connections with communities and identities as “Caregivers,” “Thinkers,” and “Builders” were significant. CHWs are vital to promoting health equity, but systemic support and resources are essential for their effectiveness.
