Accredited Social Health Activists and their contribution to maternal healthcare service utilisation in India a systematic review

by

Authors: Sonia Khajuria & Falendra K. Sudan

This review examined how India’s Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) have helped improve maternal healthcare between 2005 and 2025. The findings showed that their work contributed to more antenatal care visits and hospital births. However, challenges such as inconsistent training, delayed payments, heavy workloads, and limited support affected their work and motivation. The review also found that ASHAs need more training to support people with long-term illnesses and mental health needs. It recommends timely payments, better supervision, improved training, and career development opportunities to strengthen the ASHA workforce and improve access to healthcare.
