A Train-the-Trainer Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Program for Pediatric Pneumonia in a Low-Resource Setting

May 16, 2025 By

Authors: Michelle Lee, Fatima Mir, Amerta Ladhani, Huba Atiq, Shaun K. Morris, Mark Tessaro

This study tested a training program in Pakistan to teach community health workers (CHWs) how to use lung ultrasound to diagnose pneumonia in children. Experts from Canada trained both experienced local health workers (local champions) and CHWs with no prior ultrasound experience. The trained CHWs and champions then scanned children with suspected pneumonia, and their results were compared with expert reviews. The CHWs’ scans closely matched expert opinions, showing that they learned well. The study shows that hands-on training and local support can help CHWs reliably use ultrasound to improve pneumonia care in low-resource areas.
