A time-motion study of community health workers delivering community-based primary health care in Neno District, Malawi

Community health workers (CHWs) play a crucial role in providing primary health care within communities. However, there have been limited studies examining the specific time and tasks involved in CHWs’ work. This descriptive quantitative study used a time observation tracker to record the time CHWs dedicated to addressing specific health conditions and tasks during household visits, in Malawi. The findings revealed that CHWs spend the most time on health education, promotion, and screening, aligning with program goals. However, the overall time spent by CHWs is less than what the program originally outlined. Interestingly, CHWs address a broader range of health conditions than initially planned in the program design.
