A systematic review and narrative synthesis of health literacy interventions among Spanish speaking populations in the United States

by

Authors: Joel Hernandez, Liliana Demiranda, Priyanka Perisetla, Lauren Andrews, Keer Zhang, Rebecca Henderson, Ajay Mittal, Hannah F Norton, Melanie G Hagen

This systematic review explores health literacy interventions for Spanish-speaking populations in the U.S., who face barriers in a predominantly English-language healthcare system and have higher rates of chronic diseases like hypertension and diabetes. The review included 62 studies from various community and clinical settings. Most interventions involved in-person or multimedia education, both showing significant improvements in health literacy. Effective strategies included using community health workers (promotores) and culturally adapted multimedia tools like photo comics. Despite some limitations in external validity, these interventions can help Spanish-speaking patients navigate the healthcare system and make informed health decisions.
