A review of non-financial incentives for health worker retention in east and southern Africa

by

Authors: Yoswa M Dambisya

The paper reviews evidence from peer reviewed and “grey” English language literature on the use of non-financial incentives for CHW retention in sixteen countries in east and southern Africa (ESA): Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The paper recommends the following: ESA countries continue to introduce incentive packages, continue to develop information systems and personnel management systems, use sustainable funding mechanisms to fund incentive schemes and HRH managers undertake reviews of their incentive schemes
