A randomized controlled trial of a community health worker delivered home-based asthma intervention to improve pediatric asthma outcomes

by

Authors: Jennifer A Jonas, Cheng-Shiun Leu, Marina Reznik

In this randomized control trial, researchers evaluated the efficacy of a home-based asthma education program administered by CHWs. Researchers recruited 151 children with persistent asthma and measured days with asthma symptoms as reported by the primary caregiver. Seventy-five children were assigned to the intervention group, and data was collected at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months follow-up. While a difference in the improvement in symptoms was not observed between groups at 3 or 6 months follow-up, the intervention group was more likely to see an improvement in asthma symptoms at 9 and 12 months compared to the control group. The results of this study suggest that a CHW-led asthma intervention may improve child health outcomes.
