A qualitative study to explore mother’s experiences of a family MUAC project in two provinces in South Africa

by

Authors: C Horwood, S Luthuli, L Haskins, S Mapumulo, Z Kubeka, G Tshitaudzi

This study explored how mothers and caregivers felt about the Family MUAC program in South Africa, which trained them to measure their child’s nutrition. Mothers appreciated the support from community health workers (CHWs), who were seen as caring and helpful. At first, measuring MUAC was challenging, but with CHW guidance, mothers became more confident. The program helped mothers feel more empowered in caring for their children and improved their relationships with CHWs. Compared to clinic visits, mothers found the Family MUAC program more accessible and valuable, as it saved time and offered clearer explanations. The program proved to be effective, with positive impacts on both maternal empowerment and child health.
