A qualitative analysis of community health worker perspectives on the implementation of the preconception and pregnancy phases of the Bukhali randomised controlled trial

by

Authors: Larske M Soepnel, Shane A Norris, Khuthala Mabetha, Molebogeng Motlhatlhedi, Nokuthula Nkosi, Stephen Lye, Catherine E Draper

This study explores the factors affecting the implementation of a preconception and pregnancy intervention called Bukhali in Soweto, South Africa, from the perspective of community health workers (CHWs) known as Health Helpers (HHs). Through focus group discussions with 13 HHs, six themes emerged, including challenges with the public healthcare sector, participant perceptions of health, and socioeconomic constraints. The study highlights the importance of trust between HHs and participants in overcoming implementation challenges. Recommendations include intensified follow-up for referrals, ongoing HH training, and addressing health-related stigma. These insights can inform the next phases of Bukhali and similar interventions, as well as strengthen CHW roles in clinical settings with similar challenges.
