A mixed-methods exploration on whether and how community health navigators impact the mental health of adults with chronic health conditions in ENCOMPASS

by

Authors: Pham, Alvin

This study looked at how the Community Health Navigator (CHN) program, part of the ENCOMPASS study in Calgary, Canada, helps patients with chronic health conditions (CHCs) manage their mental health, particularly anxiety and depression. CHNs assist patients by connecting them to care, resources, and offering emotional support. The study involved both surveys and interviews to measure changes in mental health over time. While the results didn’t show a clear reduction in anxiety or depression, patients reported feeling better emotionally and more cared for after working with a CHN. The challenges faced by both CHNs and patients, like lack of mental health training and resources, might explain the mixed results. The study suggests that CHN support can improve mental well-being in ways not fully captured by the surveys.
