A Community Health Worker–Led Multicomponent Program to Promote Cervical Cancer Screening in South Asian Women: A Cluster RCT

July 11, 2022 By

Authors: Cho LeWong, Kai Chow Choi, Jieling Chen, Bernard M.H.Law, Dorothy N.S. Chan, Winnie K.W. So

South Asian women in Hong Kong have low cervical cancer screening uptake because of multiple barriers to utilizing health services. This study evaluates the effects of a community health worker−led intervention on improving cervical cancer screening uptake in this population. The study population received a 3 month intervention from CHWs with standardized training. The study found that CHW-led interventions were effective in reducing perceived barriers to cervical cancer screening and increasing the proportion of cervical cancer screening uptake in the study population. This intervention strategy could be applied to lower ethnic disparities in such uptake, and to other minority groups.
