The health sector is greatly affected by the environment, and community health workers play a crucial role in the prevention approach to health.
Environmental factors such as air pollution, water pollution, soil contamination, climate change, and deforestation are known to have significant health impacts on human beings. Health issues related to hygiene such as respiratory diseases, diarrheal diseases, flus and skin diseases; malnutrition, and deaths due to droughts and famine; accidents such as landslides, cyclones, tsunami, floods, and heatwaves have a great impact on the health systems of an area. These issues affect the physical, mental, and social well-being of individuals and communities.
The relationship between community health and environmental health is complex and multidimensional. For instance, air pollution can cause respiratory diseases such as asthma, lung cancer, and bronchitis. Water pollution can cause diarrhea, cholera, and other water-borne diseases. Climate change can lead to heat stress, vector-borne diseases, and food insecurity. Natural disasters such as floods, landslides, and cyclones can cause injuries, displacement, and mental health problems.
In many communities, community health workers are at the forefront of promoting health and well-being. These workers play a crucial role in educating people on environmental factors that can affect their health. This can include investing in sustainable development practices, promoting renewable energy sources, protecting natural resources, and enforcing environmental regulations and laws.
