Integrated Community Case Management/iCCM

Incorporating Community Case Management in Risk-Based Surveillance for Malaria Elimination in the Dominican Republic

April 28, 2025 By

This study looked at how community health workers (CHWs) helped improve malaria detection in the Dominican Republic. Normally, regular health data isn't enough to show if malaria has stopped spreading, especially when cases are low. By adding CHW data to the system, more areas could confidently be shown to be free of malaria, and for longer periods. Association of clinical signs of possible serious bacterial infections identified by community health workers with mortality of young infants in South Asia: a prospective, observational cohort study

February 14, 2025 By

This study aimed to understand how certain signs in young infants, like poor feeding or lack of movement, can predict the risk of death. Community health workers (CHWs) in Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan visited infants regularly to check for these signs. The study found that signs like no movement, poor feeding, and low body temperature were strongly linked to a higher risk of … [Read more...] about Association of clinical signs of possible serious bacterial infections identified by community health workers with mortality of young infants in South Asia: a prospective, observational cohort study

Incorporating Community Case Management in Risk-Based Surveillance for Malaria Elimination in the Dominican Republic

February 14, 2025 By

This study assessed how community health workers (CHWs) improved malaria detection in the Dominican Republic. Using a statistical method (Freedom from Infection, FFI), researchers combined routine health data with CHW data from 33 facilities (2018–2022). Without CHW data, only 52% of facilities could confirm being malaria-free for about 13 months. Adding CHW data increased this … [Read more...] about Incorporating Community Case Management in Risk-Based Surveillance for Malaria Elimination in the Dominican Republic

Community health worker and caregiver experiences and perceptions of a multimodal handheld pulse oximeter used in sick child consultations in rural Burundi: A qualitative evaluation

February 7, 2025 By

This study explored the use of pulse oximeters by community health workers (CHWs) in rural Burundi to help diagnose childhood illnesses like pneumonia. CHWs were trained to use the oximeters during home visits for children aged 6-59 months. After eight weeks, CHWs and caregivers reported that the devices were useful and easy to store, but there were challenges in using the … [Read more...] about Community health worker and caregiver experiences and perceptions of a multimodal handheld pulse oximeter used in sick child consultations in rural Burundi: A qualitative evaluation

Understanding Integrated Community Case Management Institutionalization Processes Within National Health Systems in Malawi, Mali, and Rwanda: A Qualitative Study

December 21, 2024 By

This study explored how Community Case Management (iCCM) for childhood illnesses is being integrated into national health systems in Malawi, Mali, and Rwanda. Through interviews with key informants, the study identified a process of institutionalizing iCCM in phases, from awareness to maturity. Four main factors—core values, leadership, resources, and policy—were found to drive … [Read more...] about Understanding Integrated Community Case Management Institutionalization Processes Within National Health Systems in Malawi, Mali, and Rwanda: A Qualitative Study
