This paper presents the “ZIKA system” a mobile surveillance, e-learning and forecasting system, that helps community health workers to learn techniques and good practices in the surveillance of the ZIKA virus. The system is one of the first to combine public health surveillance, citizen-driven participatory reporting and weather data-based prediction.

Training community healthcare workers on the use of information and communication technologies: a randomised controlled trial of traditional versus blended learning in Malawi, Africa

This paper examines the feasibility of incorporating distance mLearning (mobile learning) as part of a blended learning program in Malawi. Through questionnaires, CHWs’ knowledge and attitudes towards computers and mobile technology was assessed. The ‘Introduction to Information and Communication Technology and eHealth’ (ICT and eHealth) course was created to compare the effectiveness of traditional and blended learning courses in improving CHW knowledge and attitudes towards computers and mobile technology. CHW satisfaction and experience with the courses was also assessed.

This report discusses the implementation of a program that trained community health workers in southern India to identify hypertensive patients, refer them to a physician, and assist with lifestyle interventions and medications. 

Cholera Module

CORE Group has developed a module about cholera to address gaps in preparedness and response in at risk countries and communities.  The complete guide features four different lesson plans, and is complemented by flip charts that are intended to be used by community health workers.  These lessons aim to reach mothers and caregivers of children under the age of 5 because this age group has increased risk of death from cholera.
